Dear MacFixIt readers:
As of July 15, I will be stepping down from my position as editor of MacFixIt. I will no longer be doing the home page. I will similarly no longer be responsible for overseeing the site content. In my place, Ben Wilson will be the new editor. Ben is already here, working with me during this period of transition. I am confident that Ben, together with the rest of the current MacFixIt staff, will maintain the site with the same quality you have come to expect. They also have a number of ideas to enhance the site that should make it even better. I too will continue to be a part of MacFixIt. I plan to write assorted special reports as a contributing editor. They will vary from basic tutorials (something that has been missing from MacFixIt and many readers have asked to see) to more "advanced" investigations of troubleshooting matters to opinionated Margin Notes. In short, it will be the sort of stuff that I never had sufficient time to do as editor. First up, I will be writing reports from the upcoming New York Macworld Expo. With my reduced MacFixIt role, I also expect to have more time for writing books, such as the just released Mac OS X Disaster Relief. The reason for all of this is simple. I have been doing the Late-Breakers updates for over six years - along with the assortment of other tasks that go along with managing MacFixIt. As anyone who has worked on a similar Web site can attest, this is a 24/7 type of job. Much like being a doctor on call in an emergency room, you never know when something (such as a surprise release of an OS X update late on a Friday!) will require your immediate attention and change the shape of the rest of your day - or week. I have at last reached the point where I decided it was time for a change. MacFixIt has obviously grown quite a bit since I started it in 1996. Along the way, many people have contributed to its success. At the top of the list are the MacFixIt staff members, especially Robert DeLaurentis, Ilene Hoffman, and Shawn Platkus. MacFixIt would not exist today without them. Next, are all the people at the various companies whose products have appeared on MacFixIt's pages; they remained patient and helpful despite the fact that MacFixIt more often served to point out the blemishes than the beauty in their products. A special thanks to Ralph Risch and all the folks at TechTracker who had the faith in me to purchase the MacFixIt site two years ago, thereby providing more resources than I could have ever have obtained on my own. And finally, a heartfelt thanks to all the readers of MacFixIt, especially those who put their fingers to the keyboard and sent email to MacFixIt over the years. Some of you have written often enough for us to qualify as "pen pals." Whether you wrote just once or more than a hundred times, I (and the rest of the staff) are indebted to your support and advice. I encourage you to keep the email coming. And I expect to see all of you back here at MacFixIt tomorrow. Regards, Ted |
